When Spruce the porcupine arrived at our wildlife rescue, she was barely recognizable. Her once-thick coat of quills and fur had been reduced to patchy, inflamed skin due to a severe mange infestation. Mange, caused by tiny mites burrowing into the skin, left her weak, itchy, and vulnerable to the elements. Without intervention, she wouldn’t have survived the harsh conditions.
The road to recovery wasn’t easy. Spruce required medicated treatments, regular nutritional support, and a stress-free environment to heal. Slowly, the crusty lesions on her skin began to clear, and soft fur started growing back between her quills. Her appetite improved, and her energy returned.
Now, months later, Spruce is a completely different porcupine. Her coat has grown back thick and healthy, and her playful personality shines through. She spends her days exploring her enclosure, nibbling on her favorite treats, and climbing as she was meant to. Seeing the transformation from her before photo—where she was frail and suffering—to her after photo—where she stands strong and fluffy again—is a testament to the power of wildlife rehabilitation.
Spruce’s journey is a reminder that with care and dedication, even the most fragile animals can make a full recovery and get a second chance at life.
